Canastel Saint Tropez

This Indian ink painting captures the charming Rue de la Citadelle in Saint-Tropez. I chanced upon this packed alleyway one night as punters from the busy Italian restaurant Canastel were feasting upon homemade Neapolitan dishes. The scene was alive with the clinking of glasses, laughter, and the soft glow of string lights overhead. I set up my sketchbook and started to work, only to find out from the people I was painting that this particular scene features a family who had all flown in for a reunion. The narrow passage, framed by shuttered windows and climbing plants, felt like a stage for conviviality; intimate, festive, and full of character.
