A few years ago, I found myself unexpectedly immersed in the world of cycling. I was in a relationship at the time with someone who was absolutely obsessed with it, especially the Tour de France, and almost by osmosis, I became fascinated too. They were so dedicated that they actually completed the entire Tour de France route one day ahead of the professional race for charity riding with a team of other amateur cyclists.
It’s also given me a deep understanding of how challenging it is to be with someone whose entire world becomes consumed by their sport and passion. Our relationship didn’t last, but I have the utmost respect for the people who stand behind these athletes, their partners, families, and friends, because the level of commitment required affects everyone around them.
The Tour de France is more than just a cycling race; it’s a spectacle of endurance, strategy, and breathtaking landscapes that captivates millions worldwide. Founded in 1903, this prestigious event spans over three weeks, covering approximately 3,500 kilometres across diverse terrains, from gruelling mountain ascents in the Alps and Pyrenees to high-speed sprints through charming French villages.
Given my love of motor racing and having painted classic cars for years, it’s not surprising that I was drawn to it. Having painted at many racetracks around the world, I noticed the similarities: the sheer speed, raw energy, atmosphere, and excitement. There was also incredible drama, and I became intrigued by the scandals and stories of doping that have always lurked around the edges of the sport.
What makes the Tour so thrilling is the unpredictable nature of the competition. Riders battle not only against each other but also against the elements, challenging weather conditions, and the relentless demands of the course. The drama unfolds in every stage, with sudden breakaways, tactical team manoeuvres, and heroic solo efforts adding layers of excitement.
I was glued to the TV that summer, studying the riders, reading up on the history, and watching countless documentaries about the sport. That obsession poured into my own work and, over the next six months, I created many cycling scenes, trying to capture that rush of colour and movement that makes the Tour so iconic.
Now, I’ve picked my three favourite scenes to share as limited edition prints. I’m so excited to finally launch them, they’re a little tribute to a time in my life when I fell in love with a whole new subject, and a sport that still thrills me every time I watch it.
Stay tuned, they’ll be dropping in the next few days!
